Consider Design, Usage and Quality when Selecting Glassware
INDIANAPOLIS, September 19, 2007 -- Selecting the perfect glassware for any restaurant, bar or hotel is just as important as any other design aspect of the establishment. The design, usage and quality of the glassware can have a major impact on the customer experience.

When selecting glassware for a foodservice location, consider how the glassware looks relative to other design choices already made. The glassware should complement the dinnerware and flatware, as well as other tabletop accessories and the dining furniture. For example, modern, square-shaped china would not coordinate very well with a low-quality, handled mug.

Another factor to consider is the expected usage of the glassware. For all establishments, a standard beverage cooler or tumbler is a necessity. Coolers and tumblers can be purchased in sizes ranging from eight ounces to 20 ounces or more. Larger glasses usually cost more, but will cut down on the number of refills the servers will need to process.

For bars, and restaurant settings with bar service, it is important to have a wide variety of glassware types on hand. Many cocktails are best served in the correct glass. For example, a margarita in a margarita glass, wine in a wine glass or goblet and beer in a pilsner or tankard. A rocks glass accommodates a wide variety of drinks, including Manhattans, Black/White Russians or any drink ordered on the rocks.

A final factor to consider is the quality of the glassware. To reduce replacement costs in the long run, be sure to buy glassware that is rim tempered. These glasses will have a heavy bead, or roll, at the lip. Also look at the thickness of the glass itself. The thicker the glass, the greater the durability and performance.
